As part of the next phase of construction, a section of the southbound lane of Wiggenhall Road will need to close in January 2016. The closure will be from the Lammas Road junction of Wiggenhall Road to just beyond the bridge over the River Colne, near to the Wiggenhall Depot exit. See a map of the proposed closure here. The work is needed to allow a gas main to be replaced, which is necessary as part of the road construction.
The closure will last for around 5 – 6 weeks from 11 January 2016. Due to the nature of the works with National Grid it will not be possible to allow vehicles to drive towards Eastbury Road / Bushey / Oxhey / Northwood during this period and provide traffic signals. However we are able to allow vehicles to travel northward on Wiggenhall Road (i.e. towards Watford). VolkerFItzpatrick, the contractors building the road, have worked with Hertfordshire County Council on the diversions that will be put in place during the closure so that people can still get to their homes, places of work and around Watford. The diversionary routes will involve using the ring road. The routes will be clearly signposted well in advance of the closure to inform people of the closure and that there is no through route. Cyclists will still be able to travel northbound into Watford. Those wanting to travel towards Bushey/ Oxhey / Northwood will need to dismount and use the footpath. Additional signs will be installed to explain this and to instruct vehicles not to overtake cyclists through the work. Access for pedestrians is not affected during construction.
The Health Campus partners appreciate that this is going to mean disruption to the local road network and inconvenience for the community. Replacing the gas main requires extensive construction work and cannot, therefore, be accommodated without this lane closure. However, we have managed to avoid complete closure to keep traffic moving in the area.
